CONJUNCTIVO-KERATITIS ETIOLOGY IN JSC AGROCOMPLEX "GIAGINSKY" AND JSC GPP "GULKEVICHSKY"

Drozhzhina A.S., Nazarov M.V., Rodin I.A.

Summary. Massive conjunctivo-keratitis in large horned cattle of beef breeds, bringing significant economic losses due to culling of animals due to loss of breed qualities, reduced milk production and weight gain, costs of medical measures are more and more often recorded in a number of farms in the south of Russia. Clinically conjunctivo-keratitis is characterized by swelling of the eyelids, lacrimation, redness of the conjunctiva, blepharospasm, turbidity of the cornea in some cases, erosion and necrotic ulcers and lesions of the right and left eyes in the same ratio.

In veterinary practice, there is no consensus about the etiology and pathogenesis of bovine eye diseases. Scientific opinion regarding the etiology is divided between bacterial (Moraxella bovis, Chlamydia psittaci), parasitic (Thelazia spp., Rickettsia bovis) and viral (infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus – Herpesvirus).

Authors studied conjunctival swabs and blood serum of large horned cattle of Holstein-friesian breed in the age from 3 months to 3 years from the farms of Krasnodar region and the Republic of Adygea. Antibodies against herpesvirus type 1 (causative agent of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis) have been detected in 40% of samples, indicating that herpesvirus may also be the cause of infectious conjunctivokeratitis.

Thus authors concluded that the morbidity of bovine conjunctivo-keratitis in farms of Krasnodar region and the Republic of Adygea has polyetiologic nature and is due to mixed infection caused by Moraxella bovis, herpesvirus type 1 and complicated coccal opportunistic microflora.

Key words: conjunctivitis, keratitis, eye diseases, bacteria, virus, rhinotracheitis, herpesvirus, etiology, diagnosis, antibody, distribution.
