Summary. The issue is topical because of the need to search for an alternative method of biometric identification of dogs, which will be painless, cheap and reliable. Such identification method becomes possible due to features of skin structure on the nasal plane, which papillary pattern forms a unique picture being invariant with respect to time. We suggest that the crest count index should be calculated on imprints of dog's nasal plane. For that we shall import the scanned imprint of a dog's nasal plane, made by stamping ink, into Corel Draw 14, align it vertically and apply a standard table-net with lines of 0.2 mm thickness consisting of 4 columns and 3 lines to the field limited by cut-out of nares' outlines from above and from below. We shall place the EF segment in the center of the imprint, as for CD and GH segments, we shall place them in so way that they are in the pattern's center between nasal symmetry line and medial cut of naris. The segments AI, KL, MN and BJ should be equally spaced from each other. Thus, the central part of the nasal plane's imprint shall make an area of study to identify the index. The sum of crests contacting with segments CD, GH, KL, MN will be crest count index. Imprints of nasal mirror of 266 dogs of 49 breeds, halfbreed and outbred dogs have become subjects of practical research. The index values range from 26 to 67 according to findings (See Fig. 3,4). The range of German shepherd's index value is widest. Labradors, retrievers and outbred dogs differ by high density of dermatoglyphical pattern, while the majority of Kyrgyz taigans has the highest index of crest count. Analysis of findings allows insisting on that the dermatoglyphical pattern's density is of practical importance for identification of dogs, systematization and cataloging nasal mirror's imprint.

Keywords: dogs, crest count index, nasal plane's imprint, dogs' identification, German shepherd dog, Labrador-retriever, Kyrgyz taigan, outbred dogs.
