Summary. Foot-and-mouth disease is an acute highly contagious disease of cloven-hoofed and camelids domestic and wild animals. Almost absolute specificity for cloven-hoofed animals is a characteristic feature of foot-and-mouth disease. System of measures for control and prevention of FMD in the Russian Federation provides a warning introduction of the agent in the country, systematic vaccination of ruminants in the buffer zone and monitoring the efficiency of preventive immunization. FMD buffer zone includes southern regions of the Russian Federation, bordering with China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Georgia. Mass vaccination allows to create population (herd) immunity, prevent outbreaks of disease, reduce the incidence of animal or cut short started epizootic process. Data on studies of blood serum of sheep and goats in FMD buffer zone for the presence of FMD vaccine-related antibodies, are presented in the article. Analysis of the results of epizootic survey indicate dependence of the immune response of sheep and goats from the fatness at immunization, physiological state, helminth invasion. Cases of allergic reactions after vaccination in goats exposed to antibiotic therapy of postpartum mastitis were reported. Obtained data indicate the necessity for research into the field of vaccine efficacy in sheep and goats and the definition of criteria evaluation of post-vaccination serological response of animals and to clarify the vaccination schedule.

Key words: virus, foot-and-mouth disease, sheep, goats, FMD antibodies, vaccination, enzyme immunoassay, virus-neutralizing antibodies, FMD buffer zone, field vaccine efficacy.
