Technique for instrumental dorsal fixation of lumbar spine in rats

Summary. Various methods of stabilizing the vertebral column of rats are currently known, based on the fixation of the dorsal structures of the vertebrae by suture material, wire, microplates, and micro-screws. However, all of them are used exclusively with stable spinal injuries and do not allow to control the position of the vertebrae during the experiment. Authors developed and tested the technique of performing dorsal instrumental fixation of the lumbar vertebral column of the rat. Twenty Wistar rats became the object of the study. Optimal sizes of the screw pins were determined based on the data of the osteometry of the lumbar vertebrae to perform the corporal fixation. Radiography of anatomical preparations and axial skeleton of rats was also performed. As a result of the conducted studies, it was established that the thickness of the arch leg is insufficient to perform transpedicular fixation, and the linear dimensions of the bodies of the lumbar vertebrae allow the corporal fixation by two screw pins. Vertebral body fractures and fixator migration during and after the experiment were not observed. The method proposed by the authors makes it possible to control the position of the vertebrae during the operation and stably hold them in the achieved position throughout the entire experiment and it can be used for conducting experimental research in the field of vertebrology and neurosurgery.
