Summary. When determining the acute and chronic toxicity of a feed additive based on live yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii, symptom complex of poisoning in laboratory animals was not observed. The rats had no changes in the intake of feed and water, the color of visible mucous membranes, reactions to sound and pain stimuli. The values of body temperature, pulse rate and number of respiratory movements remained within the reference values. No animal deaths were detected during the experiment. A three-month period for determining chronic toxicity established insignificant changes in hematological parameters of experimental and control individuals. An increase in the absolute values of the hematocrit level, the number of erythrocytes and leukocytes was observed. This is a sign of the physiological «adjustment» of the body of laboratory rats with the inclusion of compensatory mechanisms for maintaining the balance of the body. These locomotions did not exceed physiological limits. Background values of biochemical parameters of blood serum of laboratory rats were within the reference values. The total protein content is 75,24±1,77 g/l, glucose - 4,84±0,18 mmol/l, creatinine - 67,96±4,99 mmol/l, urea -4,64±0,39 mmol/l, cholesterol - 2,13±0,21 mmol/l. An increase in the activity of serum enzymes was revealed: alkaline phosphatase - 191,13±34,27 U/l, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) - 170,25±15,78 U/l. This is not critical for the physiological norm of rodents. Long-term use of the feed additive in laboratory animals activated protein metabolism. The amount of total protein in the blood serum of individuals of the experimental groups increased by 2,8-4,5%. This indicates a better assimilation of feed nutrients.
