Summary. Mass diseases, which are characterized mainly by lesions of the mucous membranes of the mouth, hairless areas of skin of lips and nose wings, head, nose mirror, around the eyes and ears, mammary glands and limbs accompanied by the formation of nodules, vesicles, pustules, erosions, crusts and scabs are often recorded in many farms of the Russian Federation, specializing in sheep and goats. The article presents data on mass disease of sheep and goats, manifested mainly by lesions of the mucous membranes of the mouth, hairless areas of the scalp, around the eyes and the ears, lips, ears, nostrils, nasal mirror, breast, corolla, crumbs and gap (nodules, vesicles, pustules, erosions and scabs). The causative agent of contagious pustular dermatitis is DNA virus belonging to the genus Parapoxvirus family Poxviridae. By clinical signs disease is similar to the symptoms recorded under foot-and-mouth disease, sheep and goat pox, bluetongue, mycotic dermatitis and necrobacteriosis. The disease was detected not only in large sheep and goat breeding farms, but also in peasant farms and individual farms. As a rule, the disease was diagnosed through a short period of time after the introduction of new herd of sheep or goats or a change in staff. Furthermore disease of sheep and goats with the specified clinical signs was recorded in a number of wild ruminants. Infection is usually recorded in spring and autumn. Cases of contagious ecthyma of newly imported young goats were registered in private farms.
Keywords: sheep, goats, contagious pustular dermatitis (contagious ecthyma), Parapox virus, nodules, vesicles, pustules, zoonosis, foot-and-mouth disease, pox of sheep and goat, necrobacteriosis.
