Summary. Analysis on epizootic situation of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in the United Kingdom, Japan, France, the Netherlands, Taiwan, showed that skid of the virus is possible at any time. On the basis of this preventive system against foot-and-mouth disease was developed, providing systematic vaccination of ruminants in the buffer zone and the control of post-vaccination antibody levels. Mass vaccination in case of full compliance of the production strain to epizootic isolates allows to create population immunity, to prevent the outbreak of disease and to reduce the incidence or cut short the epizootic process.
Immunological efficacy of viral vaccines were evaluated for their protectivity and antigenicity. A limited number of laboratory and farm animals was used to study the immunological efficacy in vitro. Prophylactic efficacy of vaccines is estimated on large groups of large horned cattle in farms during the implementation of anti-epizootic measures.
Analysis of the results of epizootic researches of farms from different regions within the buffer zone, and data of monitoring studies of blood serum indicated the heterogeneity of the immune response to the vaccine use. Significant variations of the prevalence of post-vaccination FMD antibodies after the use of the same vaccine series were marked within the subject of the county, district or the farm.
Investigated data allowed to conclude that the field vaccine efficacy depends on many different factors, not always corresponded to the characteristics obtained during the quality control of preparation enterprises-manufacturers.
