Summary. Data on systems of rearing cattle of beef breeds in the Russian Federation are presented in the article. According to the Terrestrial Animal Health Code of the OIE the welfare of beef cattle is determined by the term biosafety. Criteria for efficiency of biosafety are: morbidity, mortality, reproductive performance, level of weight gain, as well as the physiological state. Large number of cattle of meat breeds was brought in the FMD buffer zone in recent years. The greatest threat to the beef cattle breeding of Russia are foot-and-mouth disease, nodular dermatitis. The necessity of optimization of vaccination schemes against foot-and-mouth disease of young cattle of meat breeds is established. Infection of animals with infectious bovine rhinotracheitis and viral diarrhea pathogens leads to disruption of the function of reproduction and respiratory organs. Infectious keratoconjunctivitis caused great economic damage to young growth, which is stored in the pastures. Results of epizootologic surveys of a number of households indicate that the infection of calves of beef breeds with pathogens of infectious diseases often occur at their contact with the indigenous cattle. Cattle of beef breeds may contact with wild ruminants on pastures and watering sources at extensive and semi-intensive systems of content.

Keywords: large horned cattle, beef breeds, biosafety, extensive and semiintensive content systems, foot-and-mouth disease, infectious rhinotracheitis, viral diarrhea, rotavirus, coronavirus, infectious keratoconjunctivitis, nodular dermatitis, cross-border infection.
